We decided to stay in tonight after spending the better part of the day with Jose and his friends in the Casco Viejo.
Jose managed to not only get me to drink 3 Atlas beers, but wait almost 2 hours for his “guacho” to cook so we could have lunch with him. The guacho is a seafood stew made with black beans, rice, three types of seafood and a few other bits. It was quite tasty, and we were quite lucky to have our first meal here to be an authentically local one.
Anyway, this beer is Balboa, a lager named for the 16th century explorer, not the 20th century pugilist. It’s far more bitter than the Atlas, and at 4.8 percent, packs a bit more of a punch as well. I definitely prefer the Atlas over this one.

While in a Super99 market ths evening, I ran across this beer advertisement on the end-cap of the aisle.
This abomiable standup states that Soberana is refreshing. But it also could mean so much more — like the abominable snowman is an AARP member, or that drinking Soberana will make you *extremely* hairy.
I haven’t had one yet, but suspect it will be a light lager that may even end up being refreshing.

Jose Peregrina, a lawyer who lives here in the Casco Viejo, invited us over to share a beer and some conversation.
Here we are sampling one of the national light lagers, Atlas. It’s a very light beer, with no hop bitterness and a slightly sweet finish. It’s a 3.8 percent treat for a humid day like today.
If Jose has his way, we’re going to be staying for lunch!

There are no camera tricks at work here — that bowl really is as big as her head.
The oatmeal Andrea got this morning was a little bit runnier than she normally has it. Well, it was more like a soup, really.
We’re off to the old town for some beers and wandering.
