Dinner time, con cerveza

Dinner time, con cerveza

We’ve hopped a bus for a 45 minute ride outside of the hotel zone. In our effort to find a non-hotel meal in this town, we’ve ended up at El Porton.

At first glance, it looks like a Mexican version of a Denny’s. The prices are considerably lower than the resort, and the clientele seems local (we’re the only gringoes in here). My Oaxacan pork tacos were very tasty, but Andrea’s chicken quesadilla was uninspired.

Beerwise, we’re still stuck in lager land: Superior and Dos Equis to match our meals.

The sad footnote to our meal: the placemat’s e-mail address for comments about our meal is:

miopinion@wal-mart.com.mx

Damn you, Sam Walton!

Beach beer delivery option 1

Beach beer delivery option #1

We’re on the beach enjoying some time under a palapa. And as luck would have it, we need a frosty beverage and are quite a ways from the bar.

Enter Silvia and a bucket of beers.

While I would normally eschew serving beers under such frigid conditions — an ice-filled bucket with cans of beer jammed in it — I think the current situation merits an exception. It’s 91 degrees right now, and a cold light lager is hitting the spot. Add in a lime wedge if you like, and it’s quite a refresco.

¡Benvenidos a Mexico!

¡Benvenidos a Mexico!

After a slight delay leaving Atlanta last night, we started our long weekend in Mexico.

A few thoughts about our journey down here:

– Delta’s new signature cocktails are tasty. I had a mojito (minty and refreshing) and Andrea had the mango kiss (mango vodka + cranberry cocktail + club soda) which she gave a resounding thumbs up.

– Cancun can be somewhat overwhelming. So far we have been approached for handling our luggage, 3 timeshare presentations, parasailing and scuba diving, and other “actividades.” Be prepared to say no a lot.

– The water is very blue! The photo might not do it full justice, but the Omni Cancun has 8 pools and loads of beachfront access. Blue sky and water all the way around.

Now, to check out the local cervezas.
