As we looked over our lodging options for this brief trip, Mark and I passed over more prosaic hotel options for the charm of a houseboat on a quiet downtown canal.
What a mistake that was.
At first, the Donna Wood (pictured above) seemed quaint enough — seven rooms on the bottom deck of a retired harbor patrol boat that could’ve been a convincing stunt double for a fishing trawler. But then the details got progressively nutty.
First up, no credit cards. Ouch. Then the compulsory add on fee for (mandatory) sheets, having to buy all three berths in the room to make it private…we’re starting to spend real hotel dollars here.
Then the owner, who we dubbed Captain Ron (one of Kurt Russell’s tour-de-force roles), told us about the curfew and shower peculiarities.
We didn’t realize what he meant until this morning. For the record, the alternating splash of hot water followed by a bilge pump’s volume of cold water does *not* qualify as a warm shower.
Good times.
