Duvel draught, but a little less so

We’re in London with Jack and Rose, celebrating Dad’s late 60th birthday.

After a morning lap around the National Gallery, we are taking a respite from London’s windy afternoon at All Bar One on Leicester Square.

One of the billions of gastropubs that have dropped up in the capital of late, ABO has an interesting menu of tapas and lamb burgers, and a dozen decent taps from which to choose a tipple.

As I’ve never seen this version of Duvel — a 6.8% draught served in half-pints for £2.20 — so it is my choice for lunch. It has the same characteristic flavor, only a drop in abv.

    Evidently a new brew-Duvel Green:

“The moniker was given to this beer based on it’s relative young age in terms of the brewing process when compared to the bottle conditioning phase that the full-flavored Duvel undergoes before it reaches the consumer. So, this is essentially the same beer, but made distinct by undergoing only a ’single fermentation’ rather than the additional re-fermentation of the classic version.

So “Kleine,” or green, Duvel is the same Duvel we know … sort of. The same ingredients are all there - 2-row malts, Saaz and Styrian Goldings hops - but with a different character.

The result? Apparently, this ‘young’ Duvel is a lighter, mildly hoppy and fruity version of itself that is cold filtered and kegged. This draught-only Duvel will also carry a somewhat lower ABV than its robust cousin - at 6.8%.”
