Operation R+R Moblog:
Frankfurt, Germany (2006)

One of my college roommates is returning from a tour of duty in the Middle East. I am meeting him in Frankfurt to help celebrate his return to less hostile environs. As usual, all photos are being published to the site in real-time from Atlanta and Germany using my trusty T-Mobile Treo 600, the Flickr photo service and WordPress software.

Prost!

Packed, and ready to board

Packed, and ready to board

After a handful of security screenings, and a minor inquisition upon check-in, I’ve finally made it to my gate. And judging from the huge throng of people in the waiting area, this is bound to be a full flight.

Auf widerschauen von Frankfurt!

Operation R+R is complete

Operation R+R is complete

We survived the long night of *bad* karaoke and 5 Euro lagers. We even managed to stay hydrated enough to avoid any hangovers. But as much fun as it has been, we have to break up the band today.

Matt is heading out to Luxembourg this morning, to see his friend from work. He’ll be traveling by train, through the corner of France before getting to the Grand Duchy.

As for me, I am going to the airport for my flight home. We’ll see what the airport beer scene looks like when we get there.

We had a great time, and did some long-needed catching up — it’s just funny that it happened in Germany.

Paper towel advertising?

Paper towel advertising?

Forgive the yellowed photo, but this one was too good to pass up.

All over town, there are paper towel dispensers that spit out towels with ads printed on them. I’m not sure how any salesperson makes that sale — “Yes, they *will* wipe their hands on your message…”

I need to get my German/English dictionary to get the full translation, but I suspect it’s not a financial planning company.

Livin’ large in the FRA

Livin' large in the FRA

In the plaza across from the opera house in downtown Frankfurt stands this monument to the almighty Euro.

This photo does not do this installation justice. It’s at least 25 feet high, and creates a looming presence reminding all of us below it that the Euro does not suck.

For tonight, we’ll let them have it.

Sorry Mark…we drank your take home prize

Sorry Mark...we drank your take home prize

This doppelbock from Binding Brauerei in Frankfurt was a mere .70 Euro at the supermarket (less than a buck!)

It was earmarked for take home in the suitcase, but Matt decided to break it open and give it a shot.

For what it’s worth, this is the tastiest .70 beer I’ve had in a LONG time. Matt says it’s smooth, with a hint of caramel. I’ll add that it has some raisin and toffee notes in the finish. Really tasty.

Sorry, Mark…I’ll see if I can get it at the train station tomorrow morning.
