Copenhagen Pub Crawl:
Copenhagen, Denmark (2007)

Andrea has given me a hall pass for a quick brewpub tour of Denmark's capital city. Not one to drink alone (too often anyway), I've recruited Mark to go along for the ride. You know the drill: Real-time photo publishing. T-Mobile Treo 600. Flickr photo service. WordPress software.

More from Scandinavia!

Copenhageners love their 7-11

Copenhageners love their 7-11

In our 26 hours and 5 miles of walking around the city, we found out something strangely interesting:

There have got to be hundreds of 7-11 stores here! They’re all open 24 hours, serving the type of fare that you expect at home.

Lines of shriveled, rotating hot dogs? Yep.

Ten types of flavored coffee? Of course!

Slurpees in long-straw-equipped 24-ounce cups? Unbelievably, YES! In both Coke and blueberry flavors!

This sign is at the Copenhagen airport, just before the Terminal 2 lobby. It’s good to know you can get a quick Slurpee® fix right before your flight to the center of the Slurpee® universe.

¡Vive la capitalisme!

Houseboats. Why bother?

Houseboats. Why bother?

As we looked over our lodging options for this brief trip, Mark and I passed over more prosaic hotel options for the charm of a houseboat on a quiet downtown canal.

What a mistake that was.

At first, the Donna Wood (pictured above) seemed quaint enough — seven rooms on the bottom deck of a retired harbor patrol boat that could’ve been a convincing stunt double for a fishing trawler. But then the details got progressively nutty.

First up, no credit cards. Ouch. Then the compulsory add on fee for (mandatory) sheets, having to buy all three berths in the room to make it private…we’re starting to spend real hotel dollars here.

Then the owner, who we dubbed Captain Ron (one of Kurt Russell’s tour-de-force roles), told us about the curfew and shower peculiarities.

We didn’t realize what he meant until this morning. For the record, the alternating splash of hot water followed by a bilge pump’s volume of cold water does *not* qualify as a warm shower.

Good times.

Brewery visit: Bryggriet Apollo

Brewery visit: Bryggriet Apollo

Mark and I are finishing off our whirlwind brewery tour of Copenhagen with a stop at the Bryggeriet Apollo. Yes, it happens to be tacked on to the main train station (convenient!), but that doesn’t make it a tourist trap.

While it only has two house beers — a smooth and seriously tasty stout and a pilsner that could pass for a wheat ale — it is a worthy stop for continuing the party vibe while downtown.

Skål!

Nørrebro Bryghus: The Most Expensive Beer in the World?

Nørrebro Bryghus: The Most Expensive Beer in the World?

55 DKK (almost $10!) for a 13 oz. beer. Luckily, it was a tasty smoked porter with a lot of character to stand up to my veal medallion dinner…but damn. 10 bucks for a beer??!?

Makes you appreciate what you have at home.

Who’s House? Carl’s House

Who's House? Carl's House

More beer at Jacobsen’s. Can you believe it?

With our 2 free tour beers, we’ve chosen the first round from their bottle selection.

My choice, Carl’s Porter, is really closer to an Imperial Stout. It’s really smooth, and hides its 7.8% alcohol well. The flavor profile has a nice mix of toffee, dark caramel, coffee and a slightly acrid touch of bitterness. It’s a yummy (surprising?) greeting to the Carlsberg beer family.

Mark’s Carl’s Jul is this year’s holiday beer. Closer to a vienna lager, it’s not offensive, but also not remarkable (especially since we Americans tend to be so over the top with our beer creations…it’s hard to keep your perspective).

By the way, some dude just gave us more beer tickets. It could be a long afternoon.
